Christmas is a time of joy, hope, family, food and fellowship — and three restaurant owners in Charles City joined forces Saturday to give that gift of caring and sharing back to their community.

While most restaurants and businesses were closed for the holiday, the doors of the 3 C Bistro in Charles City were open Saturday to anyone who was alone on Christmas, was kept from traveling due to the weather, was down on their luck or just looking for a friendly smile and nice conversation. The glazed ham dinner and sides being served were free — courtesy of 3 C owners James Cavanaugh and Dani Gudgeon, along with Comet Bowl owner Mark Barry and Dave's Restaurant owner David Holschlag.

"Financially they all went together on this," explained Bill Cavanaugh, James' father, who served as the official holiday greeter in his red stocking hat. "The community supports them and their businesses, so they wanted to give something back in support of their community."
