SPRINGFIELD — Cathy Wilson wasn't sure what to think when she first heard that Bon Buffet was allowing patrons to choose what to pay for their meal, but she was willing to give it a try.

"I thought how in the world can you survive in this economy letting people choose their own price," said Wilson, of Springfield.

The buffet-style restaurant has been serving customers since June 12, but decided to offer the promotion as a way to attract new customers, said Cindy Haley, manager and spokeswoman.

So far, the gamble has paid off. The restaurant, located at 1805 W. First St., was crowded Sunday afternoon, and many of those who enjoyed their lunch said they were visiting the restaurant for the first time.

"For the most part, we've done excellent," Haley said. "The sales have been fantastic."

A few customers have offered only a few dollars for their meal, but most have paid the full price, Haley said. In one case, a woman stopped by the restaurant and handed a donation to employees without even coming inside for a meal.

The promotion will continue through Tuesday.

Wilson was one of the customers who paid full price, even if it wasn't required. In fact, she said she was so pleased with the meal she thought she was getting a deal by paying the suggested price.

"It's absolutely fabulous," Wilson said.

Roger and Karen Huff of Springfield also said they were visiting for the first time and noted they paid full price as well. They said they would likely return.

"The server was very nice, very friendly," Karen Huff said.

Bon Buffet serves American and Asian dishes, and costs $7.59 for lunch and $8.99 for dinner. Drinks are an additional $1.99. For senior citizens, lunch is $6.29 for lunch and includes a drink. At dinner, senior citizens receive a 10 percent discount, Haley said.
