BUENA VISTA TWP. -- At 9:45 a.m. today two workers from Van Herweg Electric Inc. were attempting to repair electrical damage along the side of Long John Silver's Restaurant, 3761 E. Genesee in Buena Vista Township, which was struck by a Buick Century about 8 p.m. Monday.

At their feet were piles of debris, consisting of broken wood, insulation and glass. Nearby the overhang above the boarded entrance was supported by exposed wooden beams.

A burgundy side-view mirror lay among the wreckage.

Wilbur Matthews, 65, slammed into the entrance of Long John Silver's restaurant after police said Matthews had a medical issue that caused him to lose consciousness and control of his vehicle.

"The collision caused extensive damage to the vehicle and the building," Buena Vista Township police officials said. "The collision also caused a natural gas leak which forced a containment perimeter to be established for about 300 feet around the building while Consumers Energy dealt with it."

Matthews was taken to Covenant HealthCare Cooper where he was treated for minor injuries and the accident remains under investigation.
