Carlile's Barbecue on 6th Avenue South will be closed for repairs, possibly for a week or two, after a fire damaged the building tonight, one of the co-owners said.

Birmingham firefighters and police were called out to a fire at the 61-year-old restaurant at 6:08 p.m. tonight, police and firefighters said. The restaurant is in the 3500 block of 6th Avenue South.

Fire was coming out from the roof around the chimney of the restaurant when firefighters arrived, said Birmingham Battalion Chief Albert Ward. No one was in the restaurant, which generally opens for lunch only.

Fire damaged a portion of the roof and there was some smoke in the restaurant, Ward said. Firefighters also had to break the glass front door of the building to get inside, he said.

A cause of the blaze had not yet been determined, Ward said.

The two co-owners of the family-owned restaurant, Glenn Goedecke and Charlie Collat, came to the scene.

Goedecke estimated that it may take one or two weeks to make repairs and re-open the restaurant, which started in 1949 and has had different owners over the years.
