KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Knox County's mayor-elect celebrated his birthday Wednesday at a popular West Knoxville restaurant.

State Senator Tim Burchett and his wife Allison met with folks at Mr. Gatti's Pizza on Kingston Pike.

Everyone in the community was invited, though the couple asked that instead of presents, people bring pre-school age books to be donated to an area school.

"My wife and I have got enough stuff," Burchett told Volunteer TV News. "We've been blessed. So we thought it'd be a nice night to be able to do something for Fort Sanders Elementary. They have some real specials kids over there. God made them just a little bit different, but they're wonderful little children."

Burchett will be sworn in as Mayor of Knox County on September 1st. He will succeed outgoing Mayor Mike Ragsdale.

It remains unclear who will take over Burchett's state senate seat until November's election.
