What: Pure mao shan wang durian pulp is encased in organic pandan snowskin.

Price: From $30.50 for two pieces

Verdict: The skin melts in the mouth. The pulp has a luscious texture, like durian ice cream. Its flavour is fantastic - rich with a hint of bitterness for kick and balance.

Verdict: The skin is slightly doughy but the durian pulp is creamy and boasts a well-balanced bitter-sweet flavour.

Verdict: The skin is soft but slightly thick. The filling is very soft and delicious. The durian flavour packs a punch.

MAJESTIC RESTAURANT

Price: $52 for a box of eight mini pieces

Verdict: The skin is thin but gummy. The durian flavour is strong and the filling is smooth with little bits of pulp that are nice to bite into.

What: The filling is a blend of D24 durian and white lotus paste.

Price: From $4.80 per piece for mini size, and $10.80 per piece for regular size

Verdict: The skin is very soft and yields easily to the bite. The filling is not overly sweet and the durian has a nice pulpy texture although its flavour could be stronger.

THE REGENT

What: The filling is a blend of D24 durian and ingredients such as eggs and milk.

Price: $52 for a box of eight mini pieces

Verdict: The skin is slightly chewy and has a nice bite. The filling is pulpy and it has a pleasant taste.

The Others

BAKERZIN

What: The filling is 90 per cent fresh D24 durian pulp.

Price: From $7 per mini piece

Verdict: The skin is too soft, and has a powdery aftertaste. The pulp is sweet and creamy, but this seems more like a dumpling or a pudding rather than a mooncake.

BENGAWAN SOLO

What: The durian flavoured lotus paste comes with melon seeds.

Price: From $3.20 for a mini-sized piece and $9.50 a regular-sizechkd one

Verdict: The skin is a little thick and the durian flavour is not strong enough.

D'BUN

What: The filling is pure D24 durian pulp.

Verdict: The skin is too thick and chewy. The flavour of the durian pulp is not strong.

DRAGON BRAND BIRD'S NEST

What: The filling is a blend of fresh durian pulp and lotus paste.

Price: $48 for a box of nine mini pieces

Verdict: The skin is soft but it has an artificial taste not unlike bubblegum, which overwhelms the durian filling completely.

GARDEN PASTRY & CAKE

What: The filling is D24 durian pulp.

Price: From $11 per piece

Verdict: The skin is very thick. The filling tastes like cooked durian and is reminiscent of Thai durian cake. The durian flavour is evident but the pulp is over-processed.

GOODWOOD PARK HOTEL

What: D24 durian pulp is combined with a thick, creamy paste for the filling.

Price: From $28 for two pieces

Verdict: The skin is not bad but the durian filling lacks a distinctive taste and oomph.

HOME'S FAVOURITE

Where: 266 Joo Chiat Road, tel: 6272-2028

What: Mao shan wang durian pulp is encased in a bamboo charcoal powder skin.

Price: $68 for a box of four

Verdict: The skin is too soft and sticks to the fingers. The pulp, however, is very creamy and the durian flavour is punchy. The black skin is bizarre.

KIA HIANG RESTAURANT

What: The filling is pure Sultan durian pulp.

Price: From $26 for two pieces

Verdict: The skin is thick and chewy. The filling is much too sweet.

KWONG CHEONG THYE

What: The filling is durian-flavoured lotus paste.

Price: $3.80 per mini piece

Verdict: The skin is soft and the lotus paste has a nice texture, but the durian flavour is much too subtle.

PINE GARDEN'S

What: Durian-infused lotus paste envelopes a centre of mao shan wang durian pulp.

Price: $13 per piece

Verdict: The skin is a little gummy and the durian flavour is not very strong. The lotus paste, however, is not too sweet and it grows on you.

POLAR

What: The filling is a blend of D24 durian and lotus paste.

Verdict: The skin is not bad but overall, the mooncake is a little too sweet. The taste of the lotus paste is more pronounced than the durian.

Verdict: The skin is hard and dry. The lotus paste is dense ad lacks durian flavour.

SHANGRI-LA

What: The filling is D24 durian.

Price: From $9 a mini-size piece

Verdict: The pulp has a strong and pleasant taste that is like wild durians. Unfortunately, the distinctive-tasting pulp is overwhelmed by a thick, floury skin.

SWISSOTEL MERCHANT COURT

What: The filling comprises lotus paste and a white chocolate truffle sphere that encases durian pulp.

Price: $54 for a box of eight mini pieces

Verdict: The skin is too thick. The truffle is too sweet and overpowers the durian.

TAIPAN BAKERY

What: The filling is durian and mung bean paste.

Verdict: Every mouthful tastes of flour and margarine. There is no durian taste and a rancid taste lingers on the palate.

VICTORIA PEAK

What: The filling is D24 durian pulp.

Price: From $24 for two pieces

Verdict: The skin is floury and too soft. The pulp-rich filling is let down by its slightly watery consistency.

XIN CUISINE

What: Durian paste is wrapped in snowskin that is dyed blue with blue pea flower.

Price: $42 for a box of six mini pieces

Verdict: The skin is too soft but the pulp is creamy and the durian taste is perceptible.

ZHEN WEI

What: The filling is a blend of D24 durian pulp and lotus paste.
